When the Vermonter was first to receive funds from the Vermont
Legislature to continue operating, the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian
Coalition lobbied hard to add the baggage cars for bikes and skis. This was
to be part of the financial agreement between Amtrak, the Legislature, and
the Vermont Transportation Agency. Without the baggage cars for bikes, it was
the usual Montrealer with no improved qualities unique to Vermont.
We first considered taking out a few seats and outfitting existing cars
with diagonal bike racks, like angled parking. We also suggested the bike
racks of Gerry Hawkes so they would have been produced in Vermont. Amtrak
flew Gerry to Baltimore to oversee the installation of his bike racks that
also served as ski and snowboard racks. When the Vermonter first started
operations, one of the new features they heralded was the acceptance of
bikes. Amtrak has always included in the advertising promotions of the
Vermonter the train's capabilities to carry bikes.
If Amtrak has reversed their position and is no longer carrying bikes
on the Vermonter or even discouraging their acceptance through misinformation
at ticketing, the financial arrangement between Vermont and Amtrak should be
explored once again.
