Mobile phones, DVDs and iPods have replaced bikes, roller-skates and
footballs as children’s must-have items, a poll revealed today.
The techno generation would prefer a TV and a minidisc player to a
doll’s house or a radio.
But simpler pleasure such as pets and sweets still make it onto
wish-lists, according to the survey for sweet manufacturer Swizzels
Matlow.
Five hundred children were asked what they would like to find “at the
end of the rainbow” along with 500 adults who were asked what they had
wanted to find thirty years ago.
Over 20% children questioned said they wanted an iPod – a portable
music player – followed by a DVD (15%).
Adults said they had wanted bikes (15%) and roller-skates (14%), sweets
(13%), radios (13%) or pogo sticks (11%).
Andrew Matlow, communications director for Swizzels Matlow, said the
company had expected to see a “generation gap” with today’s children
expecting more and more.
“However it’s reassuring to see that kids today still desire the simple
treats in life, like sweets and much loved pets, as much as their
parents did when they were children,” he said.
