Dear educators:

I want to be sure that folks are aware of the NASA Explorer School
program (NES) and looming application deadline: January 31.

Vermont currently does not have a NASA NES.  North Country
Union Jr. High School in Derby was the first, and only, Vermont
school selected as a NES in 2003.

NASA's goal is to have NESs in each state and is actively looking
for a Vermont school team (grade 4-9) to enter into a three-year
commitment with them. Multiple schools can form a team. (See the
FAQ pdf link on the NES website.)

Professional development is provided. Some annual funding is
provided during the three years. The NES program includes
educators, students and their families. Services would be provided
through the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

The NASA application requests demographic information related to
Title I eligibility, number of students receiving free and reduced
lunch, and ethnicity diversity.

Their website states they are looking for "...schools with high
populations of underserved students. ...  Ethnicity demographics,
Title I eligibility and location of each school are also requested."

Narrative sections of the application give you a chance to make
your point for need.

Please share this information with your colleagues in your school--
or in other supervisory union districts. It would be great to have
some Vermont schools take advantage of this unique opportunity to
work with NASA.
