The Vermont Mathematics Initiative (VMI) will be offering a Linear
Algebra course this summer at UVM!
An Introduction to Linear Algebra and Its Applications
July 11-15, 8-4 (Monday 8:30-4:30)
Instructors: Julie Theoret and Susan Ojala
This content-based VMI course is intended for high school teachers to
further their mathematical knowledge. Middle level teachers with
strong arithmetic and algebra skills (such as solving quadratic
equations and factoring) are welcome to register.
The topics will include systems of linear equations, the vector space
R^n, matrix operations and properties, transformations, stochastic
matrices, determinants, eigenvectors and eigenvalues. We will
conclude with a discussion of a generalized concept of vector spaces
and their properties. Related applications and proofs will be
embedded throughout the course. The course will be taught in
traditional VMI fashion?a short amount of direct instruction followed
by practice, application and discussion, with problem solving
interspersed where applicable. A graphing calculator is required
(TI-83 or 84 preferred).
Lunch is provided each day and hotel accommodations are provided for
those traveling a distance.
