In addition to narrow shoulders and guardrail encroachment,
narrow bridges often present a serious safety concern for
cyclists and pedestrians. Even if shoulders are adequate along a
highway, any room for cyclists and pedestrians often disappears
on bridges. Undoubtedly these choke points discourage many would
be cyclists and pedestrians, especially children who might walk
or bike to school.
To address this problem we have developed a lightweight, yet
strong modular truss and panel bicycle and pedestrian bridge
system that could be easily installed at or on the sides of
highway bridges (please see
http://www.biketrack.com/introduc.htm ). We are demonstrating
and evaluating this system for wheelchair access ramps, but
would like to modify, test, evaluate and demonstrate this system
for bicycle and pedestrian bridge applications if we can find the
funding and an agency to work with in conducting the testing and
evaluation in a timely fashion. Suggestions are welcome.
