Thank you for your reply. In terms of cost, we are taking a stop-controlled,
three way intersectiion in front of the Rutland Regional Medical Center (VT)
and putting in a demonstration roundabout this summer using, essentially,
what is there for space. (The Vermont Agency of Transportation is in the
proccess of building a traffic signal at that spot which is generally
opposed.) The demonstration cost?--$800 for the design donated by the
Hospital and $2,600 for the necessary paving, lining, etc.
To be sure, this is a tremporary fix for up to a year or so, if, as
would be expected, the community wishes to move forward with a $100,000
expense using state/federal funds for a permanent installation.
Each of the the most dangerous intersections can be looked at to see
if a roundabout will fit as a demonstration first, and what the costs of a
permanent installation might be. If a typical injury in an accident is
valued at $29,000--and with even high cost constructioin areas a roundabout
being in the $200-$300,000 range--the right temporary fix and the most cost
effective one is the roundbout. Why put up with more injuries, vehicle delay
and pollution?
