Dear friend of safe streets,

Take an hour this week to call for safe Chittenden County streets for
bicyclists and pedestrians. VTA "Safety Civilians" will take to the
streets in 3 towns to educate people to the rash of pedestrian and
bicycle collisions with automobiles this summer. Stationed at busy and
dangerous intersections, Safety Civilians will hold caution signs
warning motorists of cyclists and pedestrians in the area. We will also
have data on bike/ped collisions in the local town. This is the first
step in the county to secure more federal transportation money for
sidewalk construction and launch a bicycle and pedestrian safety
education campaign.

HERE ARE THREE CHANCES TO BE A SAFETY CIVILIAN!
1) Wednesday, September 29th, 3:30 to 5 pm
Colchester, Blakely Road and Lakeshore Drive (next to Bayside Park)

2) Thursday, September 30th, 7:30 to 8:30 am
Williston, Route 2A by the I-89 Interchange

3) Thursday, September 30th, 4:30 to 5:30 pm
Burlington, Archibald Street @ H.O. Wheeler School

AFTER PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS “SAFETY CIVILIANS” URGE CAREFUL DRIVING

TIME: Wednesday, September 29th, 3:30 - 4:30 pm
PLACE: Intersection of Lakeshore Drive & Blakely Road

VTA CALLS FOR BICYCLE / PEDESTRIAN
EDUCATION & MORE ACCOMMODATIONS

CHITTENDEN COUNTY, VT -- A rash of severe traffic accidents involving
bicyclists and pedestrians this summer has Vermont Transportation
Alliance calling for safer roadways and more education. In separate
incidents this summer, two Colchester teenagers were critically injured,
one fatally, on roads without sidewalks. One month ago, a 55 year-old
Williston cyclist crashed as a truck and trailer attempted to pass him
on a narrow road. He has just recently come out of his coma.

100 years ago this month, Henry H. Bliss became America’s first
pedestrian fatality from a collision with a motor vehicle. Today, an
estimated 90 traffic accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists
occur each year in Chittenden County.

In response, Vermont Transportation Alliance calls for:
¨ Accurate reports of bicycle and pedestrian collisions by the Agency
of Transportation. The agency stopped compiling these records in 1996.
¨ Implementation of a county-wide “Share the Road” safety education
campaign. Cyclists and pedestrians make up over 10% of all roadway
fatalities in Vermont. Accordingly, at least 10% of Federal Highway
Safety money must support bicycle and pedestrian education.
¨ Revision to the County’s FY ‘2000 “Transportation Improvement Program”
to include funding for sidewalk construction. Each town has submitted
lists of critical sidewalk needs to the Metropolitan Planning
Organization, but dollars have yet to be allocated.

As an interim measure, before these proactive measures are in place,
VTA’s “Safety Civilians” will station themselves at dangerous
intersections county-wide and hold signs urging motorists to drive
cautiously.
