You are right about the research primarily generated prior to standards-based
math instruction...I am not familiar with anything that focuses specifically
on the challenges of sb math and homogeeous groups but I have seen and heard
about some horror stories...I think there are many creative ways to do
flexible groups such as grouping around particular skills and then regrouping
for others but with sb math being so integrated it is certainly a
challenge...in elementary classrooms I think a teacher who is skilled, has
math knowledge, understands the program they are using and has good
questioning techniques and provide challenge and support for all
students...it is definitely not an easy job and requires real skill.  I am
familiar with some good books and case studies focused on implementing sb
math intruction but they are not focused on the issue of homgeneous vs
heterogeneous groups.  The trick to all of this is sustained thoughtful
professional development...Beth
