Dear cycling, walking & blading enthusiasts,
Walk ‘n Roll News
NEW PARK NEAR BIKE FERRY OPENS
Mayes Landing, a one-acre riverside park, was officially
opened on July 14th with much fanfare. This parcel of land was secured through a $130,000 campaign
led by Local Motion, Winooski Valley Park District, Lake Champlain Land Trust,
Trust for Public Land, and the City of Burlington. 5 abandoned structures were demolished and now the area is a
beautiful park with amazing Winooski River views. Located at the northern terminus of the bikepath, Mayes
Landing is part of an emerging recreational and natural area where the Winooski
River meets Lake Champlain. For
more info, contact Aaron at the Trust for Public Land (802) 233-1373x14.

LEADERSHIP CHAMPLAIN TO STUDY
Under the direction of the Lake Champlain Chamber
of Commerce, the participants in its Leadership Champlain program will spend
six months evaluating and estimating the economic impact of the proposed Island
Line Rail Trail, from Burlington to the Champlain Islands. This study will be critical in our
efforts to secure funds for the corridor’s rehabilitation. The study will be initiated during the
winter of 2001 and completed in May of 2002.
ONE-WEEKEND BIKE FERRY SERVICE
TO SOUTH HERO
Join us for a special Island Line Rail Trail
weekend. On August 18th
and 19th, Local Motion will be operating the Winooski River Bike
Ferry AND a demonstration Bike Ferry at the cut in the Colchester / South Hero
Causeway. This will be the first
time that both ferries will be running and folks can walk and cycle between
downtown Burlington and the orchards of South Hero THROUGH Lake Champlain. Save the dates! More information coming in August’s
update. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Contact Brian Costello ([log in to unmask],
652-BIKE) to sign-up for either August 18th or 19th.
NEW STRIPING ON BIKEPATH!
You may have noticed that the section of the bike
path in front of Union Station has been moved east a few feet to allow for
passengers getting on and off the train.
Burlington Parks and Recreation will be out in the next few weeks to
re-paint the existing lane striping on both sides of this area between College
and King Streets. In addition,
they will be adding four stencils to the bike lane in this area to help
eliminate confusion for train riders, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
BIKE FERRY NEARS 5,000th BOARDING
Less than a month after opening, ridership on the
Winooski River Bike Ferry has exceeded projections. Sometime today, Saturday July 21st, one lucky
person will be the Bike Ferry’s 5,000th passenger. The lucky person will receive a free
season’s pass for their entire family.
Get out there today, maybe you’ll be the lucky one! Even with the Ferry’s late start due to
the high lake level, we are projecting to hit our goal of 16,000 boardings for
the season. Bike Ferry Season
Passes are still available, click on http://www.localmotionvt.org/advocacy.asp
for more info.
