NWS Burlington's Frost/Freeze Program for our forecast area (All of
Vermont, except Bennington and Windham counties and Clinton, Essex,
Franklin and St. Lawrence counties in NY) will begin as follows:

*April 25th -* Champlain and St. Lawrence River Valleys
*May 5th -* Central Vermont
*May 15th -* NE VT and Northern Adirondacks

The attached graphic represents 2012 start dates for other regions in the
Northeast. As of today, we're still awaiting decisions from NWS offices
responsible for NH and ME, yet these dates should be the same or slightly
later than what's depicted for Vermont.

This is ten days earlier than the "Normal" Start of the program based on
Climatological Average Last Freezes -
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/climo/freeze/

We ARE NOT encouraging early planting/gardening, but responding to the fact
that the well above normal temperatures of this winter and spring have
promoted farmers and local gardening enthusiasts to get "an early start".
Remember, frost and freezes can occur as late as June in a good portion of
Vermont and northern New York.

Basically, the Frost/Freeze program is a guide for small farmers and local
gardeners to assist in their decision making when freezing temperatures
threaten tender vegetation. Basically, it's up to each individual to
monitor forecasts and when temperatures threaten to fall into the mid 30s
or colder to take the necessary precautions to protect their plants.

Attached is a draft Public Information statement that will be issued later
this week or early next week announcing the formal start of the
Frost/Freeze program for portions of our forecast area.
