Dear All,
This might be heresy but we know in Village Centers they are traffic
calming through "necking" down with bulb-outs, trees and seemingly narrower
roads as a result of less wide rights-of-way indicated by pavement markings.
If the many roads in Vermont can't have shoulders widened, when the roads are
repainted, could the shoulder line be moved closer to the center line, thus
magically creating a shoulder for biking? What is the present road width and
has it increased from earlier standards? The cars would still have the same
amount of asphalt on which to travel but a visible shoulder would have been
created with the line.
